Big Idea #4:
NLR Tracks Resilience
Neutrophil/Lymphocyte Ratio (NLR) is the fastest path to clinical use of redox status and inflammation in clinical medicine. It’s cheap, easy, reliable, and it’s already in most people’s health record because neutrophils and lymphocytes are gathered as a part of the complete blood count (CBC). The CBC is routinely administered at your annual physical. There are over 8,000 studies of NLR on PubMed, generally showing that elevated NLR is predictive of disease onset, severity, and poor outcomes in a wide range of diseases and conditions, including cancer, anxiety, depression, diabetes, heart disease, liver and kidney disease, lung disease and more. As a general rule, you’d like your NLR to be less than 2. Non-hispanic blacks on average have NLR scores that are about 0.5 less than whites, and thus may exhibit symptoms at lower NLR scores.
